That's a more honest and thoughtful assessment than the OP's.  I think
Forbidden Planet was the first really good effects-driven SF movie I had
ever seen.  That shot on the landing of the power center is just
unforgettable.  Forbidden Planet would have a place in history, even if that
shot was all it had.  All of the effects - save, perhaps, the space ship -
are intelligently staged.  There isn't a hint of camp winking at the
audience, or "we don't have any money so pretend this pie plate is a space
ship"  - anywhere in this movie.  A quantum leap forward, indeed ..
